In addition to our half-day workshop on Listening and Oral Proficiency Assessment offered by Lynn Thompson (Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL)), we will also have a full day of 50-minute concurrent sessions on Saturday, October 7th.

Lynn Thompson (M.A., International Relations, American University; M.S., Applied Linguistics, Georgetown University; Bacc. ès Arts, Specialisé en Français, Université Laval) directs world language projects and provides teacher professional development for the Center for Applied Linguistics, in Washington, D.C.
As a senior member of the World Languages and International Programs area, she directed the development of the Student Oral Proficiency Assessment (SOPA) and Early Language Listening and Oral Proficiency Assessment (ELLOPA) online training courses. In addition to these online courses, Ms. Thompson provides assessment training and support to world language teachers and their programs nationally and internationally. Most recently Ms. Thompson led the development of the Classroom Observation Checklist Kit (CLOCK), a formative assessment tool for language instructors to periodically assess students’ speaking and listening comprehension skills based on observations of students’ use of the target language in a classroom setting. Ms. Thompson has served as director of the CAL STARTALK Performance Assessment Training program since 2010.
WORKSHOP: Tools and Techniques for Listening and Oral Proficiency Assessment
This workshop will familiarize participants with listening and oral proficiency assessments developed by the Center for Applied Linguistics: Classroom Observation Checklist Kit, Student Oral Proficiency Assessment (SOPA) and Early Language Listening and Oral Proficiency Assessment (ELLOPA) and provide guidance in planning for and using assessment as a tool for supporting and enhancing instruction and learning. Participants will engage in interactive discussions, simulations including hands-on practice with assessments, and activities that walk them through the procedures for developing or using existing formative and summative assessment tools effectively. Participants will receive sample assessments and an assessment planning tool which will help them effectively integrate assessment and instruction.
